Humans have been digging mines into the sides of mountains for thousands of years. Mining can potentially change many things about a mountain and drastically affect the environment. Changing the shape of a mountain can prevent water from reaching lakes and rivers. Removing trees from mountain environments can lead to devastating landslides and destroy the natural habitats of many species. If mountains are changed too much, it can affect precipitation in the area and have a serious impact on the amount of rain that falls there, leading to droughts.
