Chapter 16

Diana

“You know, Ethan was first in his class in college,” Rebecca said.

“He was valedictorian?” I asked.

“He was. Graduated college early and joined the military straight out of school.”

“That’s incredible. Did he enjoy the military?”

“Not as much as his father, I think. He only re-enlisted once. But when he decided not to make the military a career, he began one of the most successful security businesses in the country.”

“I can tell you’re very proud of him,” I said.

“He’s a good man. He’s got his quirks like everyone else, but I raised a fine boy. Any woman would be lucky to have him.”

I grinned as the two of us strolled down the sidewalk with Mr. Black Suit looming behind us.

“So, what about you?”

“What about me?” I asked.

“What do you do with your life when you aren’t being cooped up by my son?”

I giggled and shook my head at her obvious motives.

“Well, I went to college as well. Got a Bachelor’s in Business that has been practically useless.”

“That doesn’t sound so useless. What did you want to do with it?” Rebecca asked.

“I don’t know. I still don’t. I chose Business because it was easy.”

“A Business degree was easy for you.”

“Yeah. It was. The budgets and the business plans and the strategic classes. I fell asleep in most of them and still ended up with A’s and B’s.”

“It takes an intelligent woman to do something like that. My son is intelligent like that as well.”

“He strikes me as such, yes.”

“Did you ever date while you were sleeping through classes in college?” she asked.

I threw my head back and laughed as we started down a side street littered with old brick buildings.

“No, I didn’t. Not seriously, anyway. I was asked out on dates, and I went on some, but it was all mostly for fun,” I said.

“What about now? Are you dating anyone?”

“I am not,” I said, grinning.

“What do you look for in someone you are dating?”

I shook my head and smiled down at the sidewalk as Rebecca led me into one of the buildings.

“Where are we going?” I asked.

“Oh, this is an art gallery. The only one Abingdon has, actually. I know the owner,” she said.

“I love art galleries. But I’ve never enjoyed going into them alone.”

“Because they aren’t meant to be enjoyed alone.”

I turned around at the sound of the unfamiliar voice and saw a tall man approaching us. He was very tall. Easily a foot above me. He had dark blonde hair that was swept off to the side and dark green eyes that matched the tie he was wearing. His smile was broad. Kind. Gentle.

“Diana, this is the owner of the gallery. Oliver Benson,” Rebecca said.

“But most people call me Ollie,” he said.

He extended his hand and I took it, watching as his palm dwarfed mine. His touch was kind and soft.

The exact opposite of Ethan’s.

“It’s nice to meet you. I’m Diana,” I said.

“And I know everything I already need to know about you if Rebecca has taken a liking to you,” he said.
