He kept insisting that he was fine, but Valentina had her doubts about him. Maybe he believed what he was saying or he was lying so that he didn’t worry the girls, but either way he needed to be treated. He could have been in shock since the shooting.

She was. She’d known that car nearly running them down hadn’t been an accident, not when the driver had turned around and tried again. But she hadn’t thought that the person might know where she lived, might have gotten access to the parking garage and might have tried to kill them all just steps from their home.

Where she’d always felt so safe and protected and loved and happy with her grandparents and with her children. She’d been resenting Cash for keeping them inside this past week, but clearly his overprotectiveness had been the only thing keeping them safe.

She hadn’t.

So when Cash asked if his siblings could come back and meet the girls, she didn’t have the heart to say no. The girls were doing better now, health-wise, but they were still afraid and uneasy.

Thinking that maybe meeting their aunt and uncles would distract them, she had agreed to let them come back to meet the girls. When she saw how Brennan and Ashlynn and Patrick immediately fell for the little ones, her tension eased even as her guilt increased. She shouldn’t have kept the girls from their family, from their Colton family of dad, uncles, aunt and all the many, many cousins that Cash had.

In comparison Valentina’s family was small, especially since her grandparents had died. And her parents spent all their time traveling now, as if they were afraid to stop moving, afraid that if they did, they might stop living. It wasn’t retirement that had killed her grandparents, though. It had been an illness.

Fortunately that wasn’t the one that Luci had. She was going to be fine. The fever was gone and she was getting rehydrated. She was less sleepy, too, so she answered her uncles’ and aunt’s questions for both her and Ana, who was too shy to reply for herself.

Or maybe still too scared.

She’d been the one who’d seen the bad man first. Who’d seen the gun...

Valentina had seen him, too, with that cold gleam in his eyes. He had definitely intended to kill them. All of them? But why?

She could think of no reason but for Cash and the killers he hunted. He and his family. Maybe being with all of them put the girls in more danger.

But if Cash hadn’t been there...then she and the girls wouldn’t be here. They would have died for certain, if not from the car trying to run them down, then they would have died in the parking garage.

Once again Cash had saved their lives. And Valentina had yet to thank him. She felt guilty over that, too, and over how she’d treated him when he’d first shown up at the condo. All he’d wanted was to protect them.

So much so that he’d literally taken a bullet for them.
