Idiot. Idiot. Idiot!

What was she thinking? What kind of insanity was she getting into? She’d almost told him the truth. Nasna kept her blankets over her and looked straight at the wall.

Get a hold of yourself, Nasna. Don’t forget your Path. Don’t let him confuse you more....

Confuse more? It was all confusing. Why had she asked about the statue or his Partner? Why did she even care? She didn’t. Of course, she didn’t.

But then she’d come close to telling him the truth of why she was here. Of who she truly was. Why mention being clipped? This was dangerous and wrong. She had to tell him to not get the wrong idea. He couldn’t start asking questions or probing deeper. They were getting way too familiar with each other.

But... what if she had told him? What would have happened?

That was easy. He’d realize she was just as much a monster as his Partner had been. Then he’d have to... have to.…

She wanted to kick herself. Why did she care? She was a Shadow Striker. This was her Path, her destiny. What he thought of her didn’t matter. He was a tool to help her, nothing more. Just a tool. Just a—

A faint whisper reached her ears. Not from guards outside or her Path within. It was Tsuran. He’d said those words. An answer to her question of who would welcome her. A question she didn’t think had an answer.

“I would.”

She turned toward him but he didn’t look back. Was she meant to hear those words? Did he mean—

She shook her head again and glared at the wall. No, she didn’t care and wouldn’t care. She was a Shadow Striker. He didn’t change this. Nothing did. Why... why was he making this so complicated?

Those two words hit her in the chest, leaving her breathless. They couldn’t be true. Not if he knew the whole truth. Not if he knew the Path she walked in. She shut out the words. She wouldn’t let them in.

But try as she might, there was a single thought she couldn’t fight back. One she couldn’t suppress. Try as she might, this whisper from her weakness made its way through the walls of her Path.

And I would stand by you.
