A 6 lb., 2 oz. baby girl with thick brown hair, ten perfect fingers balled into a fist, and ten itty-bitty toes was born an hour and a half later in the early morning hours. A beautiful bundle of joy whose parents interestingly enough named her Joy Amber. The splitting image of Sam.

The poor tyke got passed around from loving arms to loving arms. Except Trevor’s. I could almost swear he had tears in his eyes as he took in her small features while I cradled her.

Sam’s blood pressure continued to be monitored. Her doctor had informed her and Travis earlier that once the placenta was delivered, she should be fine. With no underlying hypertension or kidney disease prior to getting pregnant, and this being her first pregnancy, everything should resolve and go back to normal. We all felt relieved with that information.

Trevor’s unabashed adoration for Joy brought me joy, no pun intended. The man had a heart of gold. Too bad he had a fear of sharing it. And he was scared to hold a newborn. Two new things I learned about him. I hoped both would change with time, especially the part about him sharing his heart.

We didn’t stick around long. Sam rested, her exhaustion from the ordeal evident, and we wanted to give her space to have special bonding time with her baby and Travis. We said our goodbyes and told her we’d see her at home the following day after the doctor discharged them.

“Shit, we never bought Joy a gift.” The realization hit me during our ride to the lobby in the elevator. “Everything has been so rushed, we forgot to bring her a present. We can’t go to the house empty-handed. We’ll have to go buy some things for Sam and the baby.”

“Do you mind if we go shopping later? I’d prefer to check in to the hotel and get settled first. Maybe take a nap. I’m spent.”

“Of course not. I’m sure you’re just dying to go to a baby store.” I nudged his arm with my elbow.

“Hey, little Joy Amber is my niece, and I’m going to spoil the shit out of her. So you can mock all you want, but I’m excited to buy her the world. Besides, I have to make sure Uncle Trevor’s number one. I can’t let Travis’s brother, Scott, steal my thunder.”

I laughed, especially hearing how he and Sam used the same phrases. But all joking aside, how touching to witness firsthand the important light in which Trevor viewed his family, a trait I’d discovered about him ages ago, but which got reinforced in situations such as this one.

When we arrived at the hotel, the attendant at the front desk informed us there had been some confusion regarding our reservation. Camilla had booked two rooms, but for some reason, the hotel system didn’t have it listed. They only had one room available, the rest occupied due to an event taking place at the convention center located down the street.

“It’s all good,” Travis told the clerk.
