CHAPTER 20

It was already approaching six that evening when Andy finally arrived at the Kempinski Hotel on Maximilian Strasse after his long journey via Doha. He’d not slept well on his flights and his mood was not improved by the rush hour traffic, which had made a forty-five-minute ride from the airport an agonising hour and twenty. He just wanted to drop his bags, grab a light meal, shower and sleep, so he’d be on-point when visiting the Prizm offices in the morning.

Even with the passage of time, he continued to feel annoyed Tutti had gone AWOL in Cape Town. Tutti’s decision to stay with Ursula before going back to Lyon rather than working with him had compounded his annoyance with the Italian. He now understood why Hobbs had laughed when he told her he had to work with Tutti. She knew he’d find him a challenge and she was right!

Andy had chosen the Kempinski as it claimed to offer its guests a quality experience and was central to the city. For now, Andy just hoped the beds were comfortable and the rooms quiet. He snapped back to the present when the hotel’s concierge, dressed in his tailored gray suit and top hat, held the door open for him, greeting him with a warm welcoming smile.

“Good evening, sir. May I have someone assist you with your luggage? Do you have a reservation with us?” the concierge asked.

“No, I’m fine with my own bags and, yes, I have a reservation. It’s in the name of Flint. I’m booked in for two nights.” Andy wasn’t certain how long he’d be staying. However, he knew it wouldn’t be less than two nights, so he’d played it safe with his booking.

“Please, let me show you to the desk and our staff will help you,” came the reply.

The check-in process was quick and undertaken with typical German efficiency. They’d told him about the bar, restaurant, the timings for the buffet breakfast and the location of the gym, with its heated swimming pool, steam room and sauna. They’d also given him a leaflet on the various health treatments available in their purpose-built health spa and told him how to book.

Less than five minutes later Andy was alone in his fourth-floor room. He threw his bags onto his bed and gave the spacious room a cursory inspection. It was exactly what he expected from a five-star hotel: space, fine furnishings and complimentary bathrobes with the hotel’s name and crest embroidered in gold on the breast pocket. Satisfied with the level of the comfort his room offered, Andy made sure the door was closed behind him and headed for the elevators.

Outside the hotel the streets were relatively quiet. Andy paused briefly to look around before turning left and, on reaching the first intersection, crossed over Maximilian Strasse. He’d picked up his first tail as he’d stepped out of the hotel and crossing the street confirmed a second, who’d slowed his pace to try and blend in with the other pedestrians, but the movement made him stand out more.
