Chapter Six
The club was crowded for a Thursday night with people starting their weekend early. Sara stood at the bar, watching Kristie dance with several women who were weekend regulars. The music was a mix of Prince songs, only a few of which Sara recognized. She felt disconnected from the music, the people, herself.
“Hey, baby. Going to dance with me?” Kristie asked.
“Not really in the mood. I don’t know why I’m
here. I guess I didn’t feel like just sitting at home doing nothing. That seemed like a worse alternative.”
Kristie gave her a hug. “There’s nothing I can say to take away your pain, except that I’m here for you. I know you were very close to your mom. I’m sure you’re going to miss her a lot.”
“I already do.”
“I’m sorry this happened. Especially now, when you’re still struggling to rebuild your life.”
“I’ll be okay.”
“Come to my office with me. I want to talk to you.”
“Okay.”
The office was a mess. There was no better word to describe it. Empty boxes were piled on the floor. Filing cabinets were open with folders stacked on top of the ones that were filed. Dirty ashtrays, filled to the brim, were on every conceivable surface. Bills and shipping receipts littered the desk. Sara thought it was a desk. She couldn’t see past the clutter to know.
“Kris, how do you function?”
“Excuse me?” Kristie moved a half-full Styrofoam coffee cup. It was filled with old cigarette butts.
“How do you work in here?”
Kristie lit a cigarette. “Aw, hell. It ain’t hard. You just shove things around until you find what you’re looking for.”
Sara sat in the office chair next to the desk. It wobbled so much, it almost threw her to the floor. “God!”
“Kinda like breakin’ in a new horse, huh?”
Sara shook her head and laughed. “The trials of
business ownership. Some things just aren’t important.”
“That’s right.” Kristie reached out and brushed Sara’s cheek lightly with her hand. “But you are. I hope you know that.”
“I’m what?”
“Very important to me.”
“Yes, I know that.”
“About what happened that night a few weeks ago …”
Sara held up her hands, pressing against the air with her fingertips. “Kris, it’s okay.”
“Well, we haven’t had a chance to talk since your mom died. After we spoke so openly about our feelings for each other, I thought I might have hurt you. That you might have taken it as a rejection.” Kristie leaned her head into her hands. Her face looked worn. “I love you to death, Sara. I want to make sure you understand that.”
“I know you do, Kris. What I think is that we’re two very good friends who are a little confused right now.” Sara got up and, stepping over some mounds of paper, looked at the photographs on the wall to the right of the desk.
“Yes, I guess we are.”
“I love you too, Kris. But quite frankly, I don’t know how I feel or what I want. Way too much has happened. So, please don’t worry about it.”
“Okay. Whatever you say.”
“Thanks for your concern.
