The skyrocketing intensity of negative feelings partisans express about the other party is surely one of the most consequential changes to have swept our political landscape since the 1990s, if not the 1960s.

The ANES has been asking people how they feel about different people and groups in society since the 1970s. Among the groups are the political parties. The questions use feeling thermometer scores, as described earlier.

The graph below tracks four average feeling thermometer scores about the Republican and Democratic parties from the Carter years through the Obama years. Solid lines represent partisans’ feelings about their own party, and dashed lines represent partisans’ feelings about the opposite party. Keep in mind that a score of 50 degrees is neutral.
