Chapter Nine

Tuesday, June 20th.

Ross Harley-Davidson. East Austin.

Laine and Farrell discussed what they had done to Adam the night before. “I went to bed feeling a bit bad for him,” said Laine, “but it’s the only way to make him help himself.”

“When I hauled his ass to headquarters, I had second thoughts,” said Farrell. “He was such a fuckin mess he was oblivious. I can imagine how pissed he’s going to be at me this morning.”

“He’ll get over it,” said Laine. “How long will they hold him in the infirmary before his arraignment?”

“Not sure, but I have to talk to Blacky and make sure he gets Calhoun on board for a compulsory court-ordered stay in a rehab facility.”

“That would solve the problem of keeping him in there,” said Laine. “If he’s locked in his room, he wouldn’t be allowed to walk away.”

“Yeah,” said Farrell. “He’d be locked down and that’s what we need. Feel bad about it, but jeeze, I hate to see him like he is now.”

“It will only get worse,” said Laine. “That’s the way the drugs work. Another OD will come along, and at the rate Adam is declining, I don’t think it would be too long.”
