If I’d known a kiss would seal the fate of my mer, I would have kissed her sooner. But I couldn’t stop with just a kiss. She deserved more. Much, much more.

She deserved the passionate fury of rogue waves and tides, of silt storms and the dangerous searing of heat. She was passionate enough, a force to be reckoned with. A storm all in herself. It lived within her, threatened destruction.

And it threatened peace.

If there was one thing I knew from our short time together, it was that she would bring peace. To my mer, to our future.

She denied being self sacrificing. She wasn’t selfless. No, selfless mer didn’t conquer. They didn’t win. I needed a ruthless bride, an intelligent bride. If there was one intricate truth the both of us understood, it was that our selfishness and stubbornness would help keep what was ours.

And destroy all those who threatened to take it away.

“I’ll send servants in to prepare you immediately.” I pulled away from her, drawing her up into a sitting position with one hand, while my other slipped from her heat.

She blinked at me as I smoothed down her dress. I kept my hands lingering near her for longer than necessary before I picked up the eye patch and secured it over my scarred eye once more.

“I’ll send them in immediately,” I repeated, my eye lingering over her. And because I couldn’t help myself, I reached out and took an errant purple-blue strand between my fingers and twisted it round and round. I smiled as I released it and when I started to get up, she stopped me by gripping my wrist.

“Wait.”

I raised a brow.

“I have one demand.”

Of course, she did.

Greedy, demanding, delicious thing.

I smiled.

“I’m listening.”
