CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Everything went wrong from the start. They had planned to set out before dawn, but the van had a flat tire. After changing the flat, they tried to slip away from town only to discover the back roads covered in snow. They turned around and used the main road which had already been cleared, but that also meant taking a longer route into the forest. By the time they reached Larkinâs property, the sun had broken the horizon. Nathan would be approaching in broad daylight.
Matters only got worse.
Over the hours of Nathanâs recovery, Larkinâs forces had scoured the blast area for survivors. In doing so, they also uncovered tracks in the snow that led them to where Robin had parked. She couldnât use that location again.
âI have a secondary spot, but the reception isnât as reliable,â she said. The way things had been going, Nathan figured that would be an understatement.
When they finally stopped, he learned he would have a forty-minute hike through the snowy woods before he reached the buildings. He wanted to argue for finding a different place to embark, one closer to the target, but he kept silent. Robin would have already considered as much, and he trusted that she had picked a location best suited for every need.
Mrs. Haugen had donated some of her husbandâs clothes, but they ill-fit Nathan. Still, the heavy boots and coat provided some protection against the cold. Anton could wear the dead manâs trousers and shirt better, which he gratefully did, but that meant little since Nathan assigned him the task of assisting Robin in the van.
âI know you want come with me, but I canât do my job if I have to worry about your safety the entire time.â Nathan knew the reasoning did not sit well, but to Antonâs credit, the man did not argue. He had agreed to follow Nathanâs orders. To bolster the decision more, Nathan mentioned the worst part of their situation â other than Maggie, they had no serious weapons. On top of all that, Maggie had limited ammunition remaining.
That had been a half-hour ago. Nathan replayed the entire day to keep his legs moving through the thick snow. Or maybe to torture himself. He should never have agreed to bring Anton along â especially after hearing about Danuta. All the sentimentality that lured Nathan into letting Anton join this assault on Larkin should have been used to insist, to force, Anton back to his lovely Danuta.
âStill working on getting eyes on you,â Robin said in his ear, âbut Iâve got a little good news.â
âWe can certainly use it.â
âAll the chaos you created when you left ââ
âI think you did that with your missiles.â
âFine, all the chaos we created has forced Clockwork into clean up duty online. I can see him trying to erase all mention of an explosion, of a missile strike, of all of it. But heâs also got to work alongside Larkinâs political team to soothe the US and Norway both.â
