Considering Inside Threats

Lockout strategies work only when the assailant is not a part of the staff or student body of the institution. As such, responding to inside threats requires different techniques. First off, once the shooter is identified as someone who has special access to the building and knows its exits, initiating an evacuation is recommended. In this case, avoid flocking to a room inside the building, and head in a mannerly way to an outside room or area that has enough cover or concealment. This room should always be prepared beforehand in the event of an emergency.

Preparing and responding to an active shooting is not impossible, so long as you have a comprehensive plan. Because it might be hard for visitors to know where to head once a firearm attack takes place, the staff working at the institution should guide them to safe exits. It also helps to scope the exits of any building you visit to make sure you know where to go if a situation suddenly escalates.
