Chapter 25

Time passed by swiftly, with every day seeming to hold something different for Liz. New people. New meetings. New places to visit. New protocols to learn. She found herself bouncing between nerve-bending tension and sheer boredom, always seemingly trapped somewhere between illusion and reality.

Liz tried to stay out of Ethan’s way—as much for her own sake as for his. She didn’t want to admit it, but he had changed these last few months. As busy as she’d been kept during the first few weeks, she’d barely noticed his indifference. But now it was painfully obvious.

So that they would have something in common, she’d made an effort to study Ethan’s policies and keep up with the political maneuverings. But when she tried to have an honest conversation about upcoming legislation, he would simply smile, never seeming to take her seriously.

Then again, why should he? He was from a long line of politicians who had been a part of the DC political scene for decades. She, on the other hand, had lived an isolated life in her idyllic cottage in the country. What would she know about running a country?

Nothing. And she longed for the days when she didn’t have to think about it.

Liz blamed Ethan’s disengagement from her on Chandler, whose supposed guidance seemed more disruptive than supportive. She saw how he manipulated and controlled every minute of Ethan’s schedule, and how he kept her husband out of her reach at all hours of the day and night.

As for the other staff in the West Wing, Liz found them arrogant, unprofessional and, like Chandler, disdainful of rules and regulations. They ignored tradition, disrespected the historic house in which they worked, and treated Liz like she was a child who needed to be reprimanded. They also had a total disregard and lack of respect for the Secret Service agents and Uniformed Division officers whose job it was to keep the president safe.

And the worst of them all was Camilla Wicks. Her reputation for being spiteful, vindictive, and vicious had apparently spread far and wide. Interns who were usually honored to be offered any position in the White House were now turning jobs down if they involved working with Camilla.

The result was a lowering of morale in other departments that had to pick up the slack. Liz tried to approach Ethan on the subject, but he continually waved her off or told her she was overreacting.

His refusal to do so much as reprimand Camilla caused Liz to wonder what hold the woman had on him. Or was it Chandler who held the reins?

Either way, sometimes she wondered if she really even knew Ethan. He always seemed to know the right things to say, but did he mean them?

The only person in the White House Liz felt comfortable with was Agent Brody, and even he seemed intent on keeping her at arm’s length. Still, she occasionally got him to smile and even caught him seeming to enjoy himself…at least when he had Garth duty.
