Martial Arts Weapons
On a regular basis, I see or hear people mentioning their intention to use various martial arts weapons for post-collapse defense. These include:
BO A staff, usually of wood, anywhere from 3 to 6 feet in length.
NUNCHUKU Frequently erroneously called “nunchucks,” two dowels connected by a length of cord or chain.
KAMA A short length of dowel with a sickle-shaped blade on the end. Traditionally these are used in pairs.
TONFA A short baton with a handle extending from the side. The PR-24 police baton is modeled after the tonfa.
Unless you are extensively trained in the use of these or other martial arts weapons, consider them to be nothing more than novelty items at best. Don’t get me wrong, in trained hands any of these martial arts weapons can be devastatingly lethal. In untrained hands though...perhaps not so much. While it is true that any weapon is better than none, at least in most scenarios, with many martial arts weapons you can just as easily injure yourself as you could an opponent. Swinging a pair of nunchuku around your head, trying to nail the other guy, you just might clobber yourself. At that point, your best hope is your opponent critically injures himself while he’s rolling on the floor laughing.
Should you decide you just have to have martial arts weapons in your arsenal, I would encourage you to shop around for both price and quality. The katana you see advertised for $19.95 will probably snap in half the first time you hit anything harder than an orange, let alone a human body. If you go the cheap route, don’t fantasize about going all Super Samurai on a group of MZBs. Try that and you’ll be back to hoping for laughter-induced cardiac arrest to come to your rescue.
