Summer unwrapped the last present and placed the dainty newborn dress with the stack of other clothes that would need to be washed and hung up in the enormous closet in the room that would be hers and the babies.
âThere you are,â Alex said as he stuck his head into the doorway. âThe last of the crew just left.â
âSorry, I should have helped with the cleanup. The girls helped bring all the presents inside and I just couldnât wait to open them. It kind of makes things more real seeing all the clothes theyâll wear and the toys theyâll play with,â Summer said. Realizing the mess she had made of the room, she stood and bent down to pick up the discarded wrapping paper. âIâll get this cleaned up...â
Her head spun and she felt her body go limp as the blood rushed down to her toes. As her legs began to fold, she gripped the armrest of the rocker and began to lower herself, only to find that she was being swept up into Alexâs arms.
âHold on, let me look at you,â he said as he sat down in the chair and held her in his lap. He examined her face and eyes, then took her hand and examined her nail beds.
âIâm okay. Let me up,â she said, though she wasnât sure she had the energy to get up if he let her. After the kiss theyâd shared earlier, this wasnât a good idea. Even her blood-deprived brain knew that.
âJust wait a minute, and quit wiggling,â Alex said, his voice a snarl.
It didnât take but a moment for her to discover why he was being so sharp with her. Her wiggling was causing a problem. A big problem.
âRelax and close your eyes, and it will pass,â Alex said.
She was pretty sure he was talking about her bout of dizziness and not his...problem. Still, she couldnât help but enjoy his moment of being uncomfortable. It only seemed right after the last few months sheâd spent with morning sickness and now this awful dizziness. It was the first spell sheâd had since sheâd seen her doctor and sheâd falsely hoped they were over.
She laid her head against his shoulder and closed her eyes as the doctor had ordered her to. She was tired. So tired. She just needed to rest for a few moments. It seemed she was always tired. She drifted off to sleep with the feel of Alexâs arms tight around her, the feel of his hard body surrounding her. She loved this new protective side of him, though she would never admit that to him. She just wished she knew that it was for her instead of their babies.
When she opened her eyes again, the room was dark, and she was in the bed. An arm, Alexâs arm, was lying across her, and his hand was resting against her stomach as if to protect the little ones inside her. Carefully, she lifted his arm and eased from the bed.
