How to Love Someone Who Does Not Love You

“If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Mark 4:23 NIV

“If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.” How does that make sense? It’s in the reading of God’s Word we hear, and faith comes through hearing. The concept of hearing while reading will hopefully make sense and resonate with those who read this story and hear of the hope available through Christ in the midst of their storm.

I am not a professional nor do I have all the answers on how to love someone who does not love you. I am, however, a walking testimony of one who God saw through child abuse, spousal abuse, parental abuse, family abuse, and workplace harassment. He taught me how to forgive, pray for, and eventually love those who spitefully used me. For those who have experienced any of these abuses or perhaps another of life’s storms, know that God’s mighty hand is reaching down to you. I pray that as you read about some of my experiences and my precious moments in hell, you are refreshed with the knowledge and hope that through your hellish circumstances God can and will help. Look for His provisions of precious moments amidst your storms and see how God can, through your experiences teach you to forgive and love others.

Only God knows the heart. But Satan knows how to push our buttons and twist our minds to the point of despair. Satan derives satisfaction keeping us down in the dumps where we feel inadequate, unacceptable, unloved, and unworthy.

Perhaps you don’t have the strength to love or even know what it looks like because you are in the pit of despair—a darkness where only God can see. Yet deep in your heart you are filled with a desire to love and be loved. Perhaps it isn’t a personal relationship but a work situation where you are struggling. You may be giving your all, yet doors are slammed in your face. For whatever reason you are not chosen for the job, the team, the promotion. They don’t like your kind. You don’t fit in.

When I went to work at the men’s prison in northern California. I was met with opposition on my first day. The watch commander wanted to meet me on my way into the prison and measure me up. In other words, he wanted to see not only what I looked like but what I was made out of. His first question and comments were, “So you think you want to be a prison guard? Well, I am sending you into ‘D’ quad where we house the Delta Donuts. They are inmates known for their horrendous crimes and must be sedated. They will make you or break you!”

When the watch commander said, “make me or break me.” I thought to myself, No one is going to make me or break me! I didn’t walk into this prison thinking I had muscle or a physical fight in me;
