As it is written, there is none righteous, no, not one. ~Romans 3:10

“So what do you know about Laura after we left?” Sean asked.

“What do you mean, what do I know?” Jared stared at his buddy. “I didn’t even know her while we were in school—and I graduated the same year as you. How the heck did the two of you know each other?”

“She was my English tutor.”

“What? And she was a year behind us? Loser.” Jared laughed.

“Hey, she’s the reason I got into Florida State. She was always a sweetheart. She was just put down a lot because of the way she looked.”

“What’s wrong with the way she looks? She’s—“

“Yeah, she’s gorgeous; she had a cute face back then, too, but....”

“What do you mean?”

“Look, I don’t want you to look at her differently because of anything I say.”

“You don’t have to worry about that, buddy. You say anything I don’t like and you can count on a knuckle sandwich. She’s a great lady.”

“Good. I wish I had the guts to stand up for her back then the way you did just now. I heard she went through some nasty stuff after I left, and I can’t help feeling I might have been at fault for some of that.”

“Why would you be responsible?”

“You know how guys on a team are. They make something out of nothing just to yank each other’s chains.”

“They said you were sleeping with her, and you didn’t deny it?” Jared hit the exact sore point that always bugged Sean.

“I told them I wasn’t sleeping with her, but they didn’t believe me—and I didn’t try very hard to convince them otherwise. It probably helped tarnish her already trashed reputation.”

Jared stood up, fists clenched. He took a deep breath before visibly deflating. He sat back down with a shake of his head. “Trina has never betrayed her trust, but she’s mentioned that Laura went through some tough times.”

“You know how it is in high school.”

“Yeah, I know it takes guts to stand up for the truth and defend the innocent.” He stood up again. “Sorry, buddy, I’m going home for the night before I say something I regret.”

Sean waited a second before responding. “You think I haven’t regretted it every day since I left? When I heard the rumors about what she was doing with her life, what she was going through, I wanted to come back and straighten it all out, but I knew nobody would have believed me, then.”

“Maybe not, but you could have tried.” Jared turned and walked out the door.
