In Mahalapur, the women who marry men of Mahalapur experience this kind of bargaining by bearing a male child and engaging in farm work as well as wood collection at a later stage when children have grown in or when there is nobody helping in getting woods from the forest or they are landless. Gond women contribute equally to the household income and thus, patriarchal ideologies are not as rigid as in other households where women’s labour is not accepted for household consumption. At the same time, they are also predisposed to being attacked on their way to the forests and to minimise this risk, they never go alone. This is another reason why children’s schooling suffers as they accompany such women to the forests.
