The Shape of Life Is Love

Good preaching makes the goal clear to the hearer. A clear goal of Christian preaching is that men should live their lives under God and with His powers, that Christians as they have been reclaimed for that life should be fruitful for God (John 15:1; Eph. 2:10; Phil. 2: 12,13). For God has set them apart for His service and purposes (the true meaning of holiness, Lev. 20:7; 1 Peter 2:9). All of the purposes of God sum up in that men should love as He loves. (Rom. 13:9; 1 John 4:16)

Love is neither a feeling nor an abstraction. The man with Christian agape sacrifices himself for the good of the next person, with a determined will and at the expense of personal pain and life itself, according to the example of Jesus (John 13:15,34; Phil. 2:2–8; Matt. 20:20–28). Love reaches its peak in the attempt to convey the life and love of God to others, through forgiveness, nurture, and witness. (Matt. 18:18; 28:19,20; Gal. 6:1 ff.)
