Chapter Seven

“You’re honestly not doing the treatment?” Horrified, Russell stood in Jake’s office glaring down at him. While he knew he had to keep his voice down, given the proximity of the outer offices, he was so enraged he wasn’t entirely certain he could maintain an even keel. Pacing back and forth, he stole glances at Jake who simply sat fiddling with his computer. Five full days had already gone by. Five days of arguing and slamming doors and crying, at least on his part. Jake remained solemn, almost completely unfettered by the news. In truth Jake was almost happy, as if dying a horrible death was some badge of honor.

“I don’t want to end my life in a hospital bed full of tubes. I want to enjoy the rest of my time.” Jake gave him a quick look before concentrating on the monitor.

Anger flaring, Russell palmed Jake’s desk and snarled. “And what if the treatments afforded you years, not months? Is it too selfish of me to ask you to live for me, for us if not for you?”

“Russell, I love you and want nothing more than to live out my life with you but I have to do this for me. Don’t you understand at all?” Tipping his head only slightly, he cautiously looked into Russell’s eyes, all the while his fingers continuing to tap on the keyboard.

“Understand? Not by a long shot.”

“Then I don’t know what to tell you.”

His eyes opening wide, Russell was completely astounded at Jake’s cold demeanor. This time he couldn’t hold back the fury. Sweeping his arm across the desk, the sound of files, papers, a stapler and other office supplies crashing into the floor brought more than a few curious glances into the glass window. “Fuck you!”

Jake sat back in his seat and sighed. “Are you through with your tantrum now because I need to get back to work. I have deadlines. Don’t you?”

Opening his mouth, Russell had no idea how to counter the almost ridiculous sounding words. As the office door opened and Kyle stepped inside, his look anguished with concern, Russell simply stood to his full height and brushed his shaking hand through his hair. “Fine. If you want to die then...” He had to fight not to say then you’ll die by yourself.

“Everything okay?” Kyle asked quietly.

“Peachy. Just perfect. We were just having a little discussion. Maybe you can talk some sense into him. You seem to be spending much more quality time with him than I do.” Huffing, Russell headed for the door. Jerking it open, he stopped short and turned around. “Are you going to be home for dinner tonight?

“I have to finish some work but I should be home,” Jake said as he smiled at Kyle. “Here’s the folder you were talking about, Kyle. All the notes are inside. I think if we can get an agreement by tomorrow then we can probably start excavation early next week. I hope any way.”

The casual manner in which Jake was simply handling business as a matter of course was somehow frightening.
