LIONSPEAK

If the lions had been the painters it would have been otherwise.

—Henry David Thoreau

THE PHILOSOPHER LION

Among philosophers, literary critics, animal trainers, and gnostic proselytizers, there has been a lot of talk lately about talking lions. Sooner or later, most of this talk gets around to the gnomic philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, who had this to say on the subject: “If a lion could talk, we could not understand him.” To me, this sounds something like that famous line from Wittgenstein’s Tractatus: “Whereof we cannot speak, thereof we must be silent.” These sentences are like two facing mirrors, each reflecting the other’s emptiness. One sentence says, There are things to know, but we cannot say them, while the other suggests, There are things to say, but we don’t know what they are.
