A Wellington boot converted to a grit hopper.

With the knowledge feed manufacturers have today, feeds are formulated to include the correct balance of calcium and phosphorus to maintain a layer at 80 per cent production for several months. It is mistakenly thought by some that to avoid soft-shelled eggs, additional oyster shell is required. This practice can result in the completely opposite effect.

A calculation known as the calcium phosphorus ratio was established many years ago. The ratio is made up of 1.1 per cent calcium to 0.7 per cent phosphorus. If there is an excess either way it may give rise to perosis (slipped hock tendon found in chicks), rickets or soft-shelled eggs. This is because both appear as tri-calcium and, if there is too much of one, it will be excreted in conjunction with the other (calcium phosphate), until only one of the properties remain, producing a complete imbalance. If, however, a glut of softshelled eggs is experienced and it is not due to feed or respiratory diseases, feeding hen size flint or granite grit it may for some reason correct the problem.
