She wound up sharing that story not only at the assembly but also at a local feminist bookstore in New York City for a street-harassment event led by Holly Kearl, who had just written a book about global street harassment. My student said she felt that much more empowered to share her story not only to her peers at school but also to a larger public audience. It’s in those moments that the personal becomes political and has a greater impact in creating solidarity and action with others.
The assembly was a powerful intervention. The impact of the girls’ stories of harassment in public spaces inspired a group of girls who had taken Jiménez’s class the previous year to approach her about starting a feminist club. It was their senior year and they wanted to bring the issues home, so to speak, by addressing harassment they experienced in the school. Their first target was the school dress code, which, as Jiménez explains, “was not addressing all of the ways they felt like they were being targeted.” They wanted “a more intersectional revision of the dress code,” she says, “and so they began to revise it with the lens of keeping girls of color in mind and the fact that we had at least one transgender girl in the school. They wanted a trans-inclusive, anti-racist dress code.” The girls developed a new version of the dress code and, with behind-the-scenes support from Jiménez, presented it to the faculty.
