CHAPTER 21

WREN

"I don't like it," Tiger said.

"You said that at least a hundred times already," I pointed out. "I'll be all right here by myself. You were the one who said this place was secure. I'm not planning to let anyone in. None of you guys can stay back while the rest of the team plays away games. And anyway, it's only for a few days."

Honestly, I was nervous as hell being here by myself, but at some point it had to happen. They couldn't put their entire lives and careers on hold for me. They'd do it if I let them. Which I wouldn't and we all knew it.

"They could break in," Tiger said stubbornly.

"How?" I asked. "Land a helicopter on the roof and rappel down to the balcony?"

He looked towards the balcony doors, lips parted, clearly picturing that in his head. "They might. I wouldn't put anything past these assholes."

"Nothing says subtle like landing a helicopter on the roof," Bray said. "Half the city would see them."

"No one wouldn't be able to act in time to stop them from grabbing Wren and flying away with her." Tiger slid his arms around me as though he could hold me in place if that happened.

"It's not Fiorelli's style," Lex pointed out. He was busy slicing vegetables to make a salad for dinner. "Not to mention, hiring a helicopter would be expensive. I'm not saying Wren isn't worth the expense, but I can't see him doing something like that. Not with the limited resources he has. When Dante was alive, that would totally have been his jam."

"Lucky for us he's long gone," Bray said. "I hate to agree with Tiger on anything, but I don't like the idea of Wren being here alone." He looked over to me. "Can you go and stay with Mum and Martin?"

"And risk them getting caught up in all this shit?" I asked. "You don't want that any more than I do."

"They could stay here." Bray's stubbled chin jutted out, as stubborn as Tiger.

"They wouldn't want that. They've done well so far to stay under the radar. If they stayed here, that could change. The last thing in the world I want is to risk either of them."

"You could come with us," Lex suggested. "Elenna and Sinclair are."

"They both work for the team," I pointed out. "I don't."

"We could get you a job as a Demon Girl," Bray said, half teasing. "Or a mascot. You'd look cute dressed as the Demon."

In spite of its name, the mascot was a cute version of a demon, with a bright red face and bright blue horns, dressed in the red and blue of the team.

"The team doesn't need either of those things," I said. "Those positions are taken by other people and I'm not going to take their jobs from them."

"I could speak to Caleb and see if there's any…work he needs done while we're travelling," Lex suggested.

"Like taking delivery of stolen gems and bringing it back to Dusk Bay with the team?" I asked.
