CHAPTER SIX

Talia stared at him in stunned amazement. “You sent the cable?”

“The morning you ran away,” he admitted, sounding quite disgusted with himself.

“I was going to do it all along. I just didn’t want you to think you were getting my help through blackmail. But when I arrived that morning to find out you’d skipped town, I realized it was going to take a major peace bribe to soothe your ruffled feathers.”

“You expect me to sleep with you for the information?” she whispered tautly.

“Coming back into my bed would be a very nice gesture of gratitude on your part, of course,” he began almost wistfully. But when she glared at him, eyes burning gold, he lifted a hand placatingly and his mouth twisted in a little smile of surrender.

“Don’t worry, the information is yours without any major strings attached.”

“I… I don’t know what to say, Kane.” Talia tried desperately to analyze the situation the way she taught her students. This was a scene loaded with power dynamics, and as far as she could see, Kane held all the leverage. Why should he walk in here and give her something for nothing? Men like Kane Sebastian were seldom altruistic! Did he really expect her to sleep with him out of gratitude for the information? After what he’d done to her?

“I do have one small request…” he murmured delicately.

“I knew it!”

“I would like a full explanation of your friend Pomeroy. Is that too much to ask?

Things seem to have gotten a little more complicated since we last talked,” he concluded dryly.

Talia considered that. She badly wanted to talk to someone and Kane knew more of the story now than anyone else, in addition to which, in spite of her personal hostility toward him, she realized she trusted him in some strange fashion. He wouldn’t deliberately jeopardize Justin West-brook’s safety any more than she would. And it would be such a relief to discuss this with a logical man like Kane.

“Pomeroy scared me, Kane,” Talia finally said flatly.

The green eyes narrowed. Quite suddenly all the wistfulness and the placating qualities vanished from his expression.

“Did he threaten you?”

She shook her head quickly, not liking the hardness in him. “No, no, it wasn’t that.

It was just that he made me realize what I might be doing to Westbrook, what I might already have done. If… if Justin’s still alive, there’s probably a very good reason why he doesn’t want to be found. I may have created a path that will lead straight to him.

A path someone like Pomeroy can follow. There’s something strange about Pomeroy, Kane. And that scares me too.”

“Go on.”

“Well, why would the FBI start asking questions? Justin didn’t work for them. He was often attached to various agencies, but he always worked overseas, never in this country, to my knowledge. The FBI is limited to domestic matters, I believe. And why would Pomeroy ask me questions but not you? He wants to know what I found out about the South American assignment, but he didn’t talk to you.
