CHAPTER 15
I awoke with a startle, eyes darting, taking in my surroundings. Pure blackness. I started to panic, feeling the stone ground.
Reaching my hands out in front of me, I tried to figure out where I was, but my fingers didn’t bump into anything. That was until I felt the cold, hard steel of what felt like prison bars. My breaths began to quicken, and I wrapped my hands around the bars, pulling at them with all my might. The last thing I remembered was Erimon calling my name, and the sight of an eerie, ghostly woman screaming at such a high decibel I’d almost gone deaf.
A light illuminated outside. I squinted my eyes, adjusting to the sudden brightness, realizing that I was, in fact, completely encased within a prison cell. Nothing but stone walls and steel bars surrounded me. I gripped the bars, trying to peer outside of them, noticing that the source of the small light flickered. It must’ve been a lantern or a torch, and the light grew closer and closer.
The figure that carried the light hummed to itself. The tune sounded like “Danny Boy”, and I tried to make out who or what it was. The figure lifted the lantern once it arrived at the front of my cell. I gasped, recognizing the face of the crazy tourist woman, Aibell.
“Aibell? What the hell is going on?” I beseeched, grasping the bars, as if I could pry them apart with my bare hands.
Aibell shoved the lantern in my direction, nearly blinding me. She narrowed her eyes, the hood of her cloak casting shadows over her face. “Yer not one for subtle hints, are ya?”
I considered myself a rather intelligent human being, and aside from my obvious captivity, I wasn’t following her hints in the slightest. “Clearly not.”
Aibell tisked, turning away, taking the only light source in the immediate area away with her. I liked being able to see, so I reached my hand through the bars, attempting to grab her.
“Wait!”
Aibell whipped around so quickly, I thought she was going to bite my hand off. I withdrew my hand back into the confinements of my cell. “Why am I here?”
Aibell chortled like a hyena, taking a few steps closer so that her nose nearly pressed against the bars.
“When the devil himself displays such keen interest in someone, it tends to spark interest from…others.” She started to turn away again.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
Aibell stopped, sighing, before turning towards me. “It’ll all make sense to ya soon. In the meantime, why don’t ya take a seat and practice the art of silence?”
I had many skills, but being quiet was not amongst them. Frantically, I pulled at the bars again, hoping I had somehow loosened them before. She cackled, tilting her head towards the ceiling.
“I have friends. They’ll come for me.” That came out a bit more desperate than I would’ve preferred.
Aibell walked away, glancing over her shoulder. “Not here, they won’t.” Her laughter continued down the stone hallway, the sound slowly diminishing like the light she carried.
