Chapter 12
When I woke the next morning, it wasnât because of the blazing sun streaking into my berth. No, it was still dark, and Iâd been in a deep sleep that nothing short of a sharp thwack to the jaw could pull me from. Sundance!
âHey, cut that out!â I said, opening my eyes so I could grab his paw before he hit me again.
Ah, youâre awake. Lovely. I figured youâd want to know my food bowl is empty.
I sighed, brushing hair from my face. âYou figured I was in a deep sleep and worried about your food bowl, huh? Whatâs it been? Four hours since you last ate?â
Not quite. Iâm no couch potato, you know. Iâm active. I need calories, and the idea of hunting for nourishment is repulsive. I wonât do it.
âFine. Just give me a minute.â I stuffed my feet into slippers, pulled on a sweater against the chill, and used the bathroom.
âItâs only six-fifteen,â I complained. âNew rule. No waking me up before daylight.â
âMeow.â
âSure, pretend you can only talk cat now.â
As I filled his bowl with wet food (not dry) as commanded, I told him about what I believed was the effect of my cookies.
Well done. Iâm proud of you, Adelaide. He bounded to his bowl, wolfing down his food indelicately.
I snorted at his response. Heâd sounded like a parent. A ravished parent. Youâd think heâd not eaten in days.
I was rather proud of myself, too. Iâd used my witchcraft successfully. With this revelation came that familiar hum in my ears. Just thinking about the power inside me seemed to get it going. I should think about something else. Like finding Fiona a place to live.
After making coffee, I looked for rentals on the online community news site and found a couple of places available in Whalesback Cove, so that was promising. Since I didnât know Fionaâs price range, I wouldnât reach out to these landlords without speaking to her first.
A knock sounded on my hatch.
âComing!â
I slid back the top hatch and peered into the dim illumination provided by a dock light. Fiona stood in the cockpit, one hand holding her hat in place while the tail-ends of her printed scarf fluttered in the breeze.
âFiona!â I exclaimed. âItâs not even daylight. What are you doing here?â
âIâve had a realization, and I wanted to talk to you about it right away.â
Next time, Iâd have to add a caveat to my spell that people donât share their self-awareness insights with me before dawn. âOkay. Come on down.â I stepped back.
âCan you come up here? I need a little help.â
âWith what?â I asked, cautiously.
I climbed out of the cabin to see suitcases on the dockâfour of them. No, five!
âWhat is all this stuff?â
âShhh,â she said, looking toward Xavierâs boat. âJust a few of my things. The taxi driver was kind to bring them this far for me.â
I guess sheâd taken my talk yesterday to heart and had left Cecileâs place. Served me right that sheâd landed on my doorstep after Iâd offered her bespelled cookies.
