5 • Complex ecologism

In this chapter, drawing on the complexity understandings of systems as co-constituted and co-evolving that we have developed in the previous three chapters, we will suggest the need to account for changes in the biosphere resulting from human endeavours together with an understanding of the ways in which multiple and complex inequalities shape the environmental impact of different populations and raise regionally specific issues of insecurity for humans, other species and scapes. In order to theorize the environment as implicated in human systems and as fundamentally altered by them, we need to draw on various strands of thinking in ‘green’ political theory, or political ecologism. We will be developing elements of eco-socialism, ecofeminism and liberation ecologism in arguing that human relations to environments are characterized by social intersectionality and complex inequalities resulting from the interplay of complex systems of social relations such as colonialism, capitalism and patriarchy. Complexity approaches can help capture the patterns of these relations. So, the chapter draws on complexity in order to understand, first, the co-constitution of human communities and the ‘natural environment’, and secondly, that human relations with non-human species are shaped by persistent relations of power around gender, class, ethnicity, locality, and so on. This enables a move towards a posthuman international relations in which the embodied condition of the human species, and our co-constituted relations with other species and natural systems, frames our intellectual projects.
