Chapter Nine

“What is in that? It smells evil.” Neekil looked at her container of soup.

“That is how you know it’s good. It is hot, spicy, tofu, peas, shredded black fungus, and a bunch of other stuff.”

He lifted his head, and his nostrils flared. “Can I try it?”

She looked around. There was only one spoon. Sighing, she got a spoonful and lifted it. “Open up, or do you need the mention of an airplane like my nephew used to?”

He narrowed his eyes but opened his mouth to take the plastic spoon in. When he closed his lips over it, she pulled it out. There was a bit of soup still in the spoon, so she brought it to her mouth and licked it clean. She paused when she took in the taste of him that was left behind. She closed her lips and understood part of the draw that he would have. He tasted amazing. A kiss would be devastating.

She relaxed slightly, and suddenly, something made sense. “You kiss my hand every time I am embarrassed.”

“Yes. It is to relax you.”

She shivered at the earnest expression in his eyes. “Yeah, but it is you that is relaxing me. Pheromones in the kiss.”

“Of course, it is. That is the idea. The first dark elves were ass ugly. If they didn’t have this adaptation, they would never have found mates, and we got better looking with every generation. The seduction adaptation remained.” He used his chopsticks to pick up his chicken.

She returned to her soup. “That is a strange family heritage.”

“It isn’t a box that weighs four hundred pounds, but it keeps me warm.” He smiled. “Also, consider my past experiences as practice for a permanent partner to enjoy at an as-yet-undetermined date.”

She sighed. “You never stop with the flirting.”

“This is earnest courtship or as earnest as I get.”

“I don’t even know how tall you are.” It was a weak argument, but the only one she could think of. “So, what do you think of the soup?”

“Fucking hot.”

She laughed. “I am lucky that I also inherited a cast-iron stomach. This should help perk me up with a bit more sleep.”

She finished her soup, ate her spring roll, and snagged the mango pudding that she had ordered for her own consumption.

She sat and savoured the creamy mango as she watched the last of Neekil’s meal disappear. “So, the nurses are really scared of me?”

Neekil nodded grimly. “One of them can sense botanicals, and another one is an empath. One fed the other’s senses, and neither would come to your room. That is why your pain meds ran out, and that is why you hadn’t been fed. They haven’t updated your file, and you were still registered as unconscious when I went to the duty station. They will be by shortly to check on you. They are about to start evening rounds.”

“Oh, yay. Organized prodding. Well, at least I got a bath today.”

“Yeah, I was going to wash your hair. Hey, where is my pudding?”

She sighed and pulled the mango pudding out from under her blanket.
