Chapter 12
Torment of Angels
Eben awoke with a start and instantly knew that something was wrong. His head throbbed and his entire body ached. He tried moving but that caused even more pain to shoot through his head. He also realized that he was blindfolded and gagged. ‘Why am I still alive?’ he wondered but then decided he didn’t really want to know the specifics. ‘He got me,’ the blond thought wryly. ‘And, at this point, it really can’t be anyone else but Dr. McQuaide. No one else really knew.’
That realization caused him no joy. ‘I fell for you… and not only did I let you slip away but I let you get me.’ Eben wasn’t proud of that fact nor was he happy with himself. ‘How could I have messed up this investigation so completely?’ Taking a deep breath to calm himself, he decided to assess the situation and see if he could find a way out.
He was lying supine and naked on a cold cement floor that chilled his entire body but he could twist from side to side with some effort. His arms and shoulders ached because his wrists were handcuffed together and fastened to the wall. The cuffs had been looped through some sort of metal hook embedded in the cement wall. ‘I wonder if the bastard used my handcuffs?’ Eben mused as he ran his fingertips along the edge of the manacle then onto the hook that held the chain in place. It felt as though it were a meat hook that had been manually closed around the chain. Eben wondered if that might have caused metal fatigue and if he might be able to pry it open. Sprawled on the floor as he was, he didn’t have much leverage but given time, he hoped to be able to pry it open.
His ankles seemed to be bound with some sort of rope. It was tight, chafed his skin, and seemed to be connected to something. Eben was able to twist his legs but could only pull them in about an inch or two. He guessed that was so he couldn’t get the leverage he needed to free his hands. ‘Fucking asshole seems to have thought of everything.’
After moving his body as best he could, he determined that nothing had been broken but that he’d been beaten and raped. His face, arms, and torso hurt in a few spots in which he didn’t recall being struck during the initial assault. His ass also hurt and, specifically, his entrance burned. The concept that he’d been raped while unconscious disturbed Eben but he forced himself not to think about it. He needed to focus all his energy on escaping lest he became the next murder victim.
Clearing his mind of the pain and the overwhelming reality of the situation, Eben worked methodically until he had succeeded in bending the meat hook with limited success. After what seemed to be hours, he felt that he had managed to force the hook about half as far as he needed in order to pull the handcuffs free.
