Practice

Now that we’ve tried one together, practice a few on your own. Remember, your portraits don’t need to be perfect. Have fun!

ACTIVITY SIX

Beyond the Face

Now for the finishing touches: hair, beards, necks, and ears, plus any individual characteristics, like scars, freckles, moles, and glasses. These details bring out the uniqueness of your subject.

When sketching hair, think of how light travels across the shape of the head. Where are the highlights? Roughly draw hair with thick, broad, sweeping strokes, and shade in the direction the hair is curling. After that, add a few thin marks for wisps of hair around the face and head. Apply the same method for beards and mustaches.
