Saturday 24, Sunday 25 May. 57°F

The Men’s Pond smells of vegetables and the Mixed looks like vegetable soup. Yesterday there was twenty yards of scum stretching out from the jetty, then the wind changed overnight, the jetty is clear and the soup reaches back from the causeway. It is faintly oily and has a bluish, rainbowy tinge. The oils, says Danny, are created by the decaying blossom, so it’s probably good for the skin. Maybe the boys should bottle it, label it and flog it to the summer swimmers.

When I arrived this morning Win’s ancient husband was waiting for her to dry off.

‘No,’ he said, ‘I don’t swim myself. Tried it when I was young but never really fancied it. Took up cycling instead.’

And Win? ‘Twice a day, morning and afternoon. I just go with her to the ponds – by bike, of course.’
