Dripping Crimson

Monday Morning

The door clicked behind her. Patricia fell to her knees and began knocking the floor, feeling the wooden planks. Her knees mopped the floor and her nails scooped up dirt. The guards who had raided her cabin were not of the conscientious kind. The clothes they had strewn over the floor were shoved aside once again by Patricia.

Once she found the right plank, she hooked it out with pressure and a pair of tweezers. It slipped out smoothly, like a slab of butter. Inside laid her second most precious prize: her escape bag. Within the leather satchel she would find two passports, a wad of cash, spare clothes, and a pistol.

With the arrival in New York imminent, so was her escape. It seemed like decades ago that they had left Southampton. This would be her last visit to her cabin. With good-hearted and naive Rodrigo by her side, she should have enough cover to escape unseen.

There was no doubt that the plan had gone awry. If Helen had never died then Mr Phillips would have never known that the watch was missing. She would have slipped away without a care in the world. Unfortunately for her kind, the plans of a thief do not always run smoothly.

Growing up, Patricia had watched her mother slave away at the textile factory for pennies. A lifetime of hardship and they still struggled to live, just the two of them. Patricia had made her father out to be a sweet man so Rodrigo would get her watch, however, her father had actually been a worthless drunk who was eventually stabbed to death over gambling debts.

One thing Patricia learned from her father was that riches were not as far from us as they often seemed. She learned from her mother that a good, honest life was merely a poor one. One life was reckless and pathetic while the other was practically enslavement. Patricia concluded that there had to be another way.

It started with pick-pocketing as a child. A penny here, a pound there. Spare change to the wealthy, but food for a week for her and her mother. It was always the wealthy she targeted; never could she steal from people like her mother, people she belonged to. If her mother knew how dangerous Patricia's plans had become, she would have been terribly disappointed and outraged.

The watch was her one and only prize she had aimed for. She knew its value in terms of pounds, but never anticipated such a chase. It would not only pay for the surgery her sick mother needed, but it would let them live comfortably for years. Did the watch mean something more to Mr Phillips? She wasn’t sure. But the watch was more than just money to her. With her mother dying and unable to work, she needed every penny to save what little family she had left.

Snatching her bag, she opened her cabin’s door. Two women walked idly down, chatting. Suddenly, a third appeared. The third's wide eyes and hysteric voice indicated her terror.
