Stone got out of the druids’ compound without any sign of Acantha; either Nessa had put her foot down, or his sister simply hadn’t had anything else to say to him.

He debated whether to return to Caventhorne to share his new information with Eddie and Ward, but decided there was no point in it. His next step at this stage was clear: head back to Los Robles and continue his search for whoever had cursed Verity, and for that, Jason, Amber, and Gina would be of more help than the two magical researchers halfway around the world from the action.

One nice thing about popping back and forth between England and the U.S.—sometimes the time zones worked in his favor. It had been late afternoon in Windermere, which meant it was early morning in California. Hell on the sleep schedule, but great when you needed to talk to someone in a hurry.

Jason answered his phone on the first ring. “Al? It’s early. Did you find something? And where the hell have you been? Eddie and Ward said you disappeared, and then I get this cryptic text saying you’re okay, and—”

“Slow down, Jason. I’m fine. I’ve been busy doing a few things I’d rather not discuss, but yes, I’ve got some news. I’ve got to go back to Los Robles. You’re welcome to come along, but I need some mundane help first.”

“Damn straight I want to come along. I’ll pack a bag and meet you at the agency in an hour.”
