Jax is waiting for me downtown, perched in front of my mother’s newly repaired shop windows. I park the Cadillac out front and take a look at the sparkling new glass. With the graffiti scrubbed off the walls, the place almost looks like it could re-open for business any day now, something my mom is insisting we do. I don’t know what the fucking rush is.

Her court proceedings are set to begin tomorrow, and it’s something neither of us are looking forward to. The added stress has left me tense all week, but that doesn’t mean I can just curl up into a ball and die, because no matter what’s happening, life goes on.

I nod at Jax as I get out of the car. It feels like we haven’t spoken in days. I’ve been letting him fuck off and do his own thing for a while, knowing that whether he wants to admit it or not, he’s got an aunt he’s grieving. I take it he needs the personal space, but he’s been more private than usual about saying what he does, or what he’s been up to.

But in a few days, the gang will be together again, closer than ever. That’s because the cadets are set to graduate from cadets, and become real members of the Daggers, and the ceremony isn’t without its elaborate sticking points. Those sticking points require supplies, which is exactly why we’re at my mom’s store.

I unlock the doors and let us in. The musky sandalwood scent of past incense burned greets my nose, a nostalgic smell that fills my brain with memories of better days. The time after my step-father’s death were when I felt like I saw my mother be most alive, bustling around her shop with an old world style straw broom like an actual witch. Sometimes I feel like she liked the gossip.

All that scrutiny only served to make me a stronger outsider, until eventually, I made it so the outside was where people wanted to be. There was a point when Diablo Beach was at risk of being ruled and overrun with people like my step-father, and he had tried his best to clean up the streets. But once he was gone, the freaks thrived until the city resembled the way it looks now.

It turns out you can’t keep people’s lascivious nature tucked into a neat box forever. Eventually it leaks through like a slow swirling tsunami until it’s consumed everything in its path.

“You see anything before I got here?” I ask Jax. With tensions still running high between the gangs, especially us and the Snake Eyes, I’ve been on high alert ever since, and the shit with Carina has only served to compound that. No matter how much I try to tell myself I won’t get sucked into other people’s drama, it seems like other people’s drama always comes and finds me.

“Nothing out of the ordinary,” Jax says. “Just the guys wrapping up on the window job.”

We both stand back and survey the big squares of glass from the inside.
