I should have been exhausted by the time we reached Ransomâs house, but instead I was wired. Something had shifted between us. We werenât boss and employee anymore. We were something more.
And it scared the fuck out of me. I hadnât ever been with a man beforeâmy lack of experience with that was embarrassing.
But I wasnât going to let it scare me away from Ransom. At least, not tonight. I was going to take whatever he gave because it was such a relief to, for once, feel like I was a normal woman. A normal woman with normal needs and a man who could more than fulfill them right in front of me.
Ransomâs apartment was on the top floor of a historic building a few short blocks from the bar. I wasnât sure what Iâd expected but not something as charming or as simple as this.
It felt more like home to me than my real home had since my mother died.
After walking up the stairs, Ransom kept my hand in his and guided me inside. He couldnât seem to stop touching me, and I didnât want him to.
Ransom set his keys on a hook by the door and walked to the middle of the apartment with my hand still in his.
âYou live close enough to the bar to walk,â I said to him.
He nodded. âI do sometimes.â
I scanned the living room, then saw the kitchen. My eyes widened. It was beautiful.
When I glanced back, Ransom smiled and released my hand. âGo ahead. Look around.â
I missed the warmth of his hand immediately, but I was intrigued with his place. There were brick walls that might have been cold, but there was enough furniture and other colors to make it warm. The kitchen was like a dream. All stainless-steel appliances and a large island with a warm wood butcher board.
âThis is so great. Itâsâ¦â I flashed him a smile and walked to the island.
He followed me, eyes hungry, and stopped on the other side. âWhat were you going to say?â
I glanced away. âJust that Iâd love a kitchen like this.â
I would. The whole place was perfect. Perfect for himâbut I could imagine myself there, too. Enjoying the space with him. Enjoying a life with him.
God, how pathetic was that?
Ransom stepped in front of me, his boots in my vision first before his entire body was there, consuming me.
âYouâre welcome to use the kitchen,â he said, voice so low it vibrated in my chest.
I looked up, met his eyes, and was instantly charmed by the dazzling smile he gave me. I rarely ever saw him smile, and it took my breath away.
âYouâre welcome to use any space in the apartment that you want,â he continued. He pointed. âThere are two bedrooms that way. I use the spare one as an office sometimes but thereâs also a bed.â
I swore his voice dropped slightly when he said âbed.â It definitely went huskier. I was practically soaking wet at something so simple. Fuck. I was in
