The Boater

This popular, traditional pub features a great beer garden for summer days. A must for sports fans (particularly rugby) you’ll find six cask ales, five draught lagers and craft beers from around the world. Good pub grub, too. ££

Mús

Mús (pronounced ‘moose’) is an unpretentious café claiming one of the best cups of coffee in the city. Its welcoming purple frontage draws you in and the claim is well substantiated. Alongside your favourite brew are great bacon sandwiches, croissants and tasty cakes. £

Ring O Bells

10 Widcombe Parade; tel: 01225 448870; food served Mon–Fri noon–2.30pm, 5pm–9pm.

This bustling gastro-pub has scrubbed wooden tables and benches, and flagstone floors. The menu contains dishes such as fish of the day with crispy rice noodles or pork fillet with sweet and spicy glaze. A tapas menu is available. Sunday is jazz night. ££

Secret Garden Café

Prior Park Road; tel: 01225 789788; Mon–Sat 8.30am–5pm, Sun 10.30am–4pm.

Located in Prior Park Garden Centre, this café is a popular spot for breakfast, lunch or afternoon cream tea. Good for vegetarians but carnivores are not forgotten with some excellent homemade burgers on the menu. The coffee is first-class, too. £

White Hart

One of Bath’s best gastro-pubs, it fills up quickly so book ahead if you can. The unpretentious but inspired menu features dishes such as guinea fowl wrapped in bacon or rib-eye steak with tarragon mustard butter. Service is always friendly. Relaxed and informal with great ales, a good wine selection and a pleasant beer garden. ££

Widcombe Deli

This independent deli chain serves up scrummy breakfasts and a nice selection of freshly made tarts and salads for lunch. Dog friendly and plenty of outdoor seating. Gluten-free options available. £
