Perhaps the apogee of Art Deco styling, the GE Building (or 30 Rock) rises 850ft, its symmetrical monumental lines matching the scale of Manhattan itself. In the GE lobby, José Maria Sert’s murals, American Progress and Time, are in tune with the 1930s Art Deco ambience – though paintings by Diego Rivera were scrapped after the artist refused to remove an image glorifying Lenin. Among the building’s many offices are the NBC Studios, which produce the long-running comedy hit Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Studio tours and tapings of select shows (limited availability) should satisfy most curiosity seekers.
