Itâs a long drive along the B8011 to remote Uig, which suffered badly from the Clearances. The landscape here is hillier and more dramatic than elsewhere, a combination of myriad islets, wild cliff scenery and patches of pristine golden sand.

The main road squeezes through the narrow canyon of Glen Valtos (Glèann Bhaltois) and on to Timsgarry (Timsgearraidh), overlooking the yawning Uig Sands (Trà igh Uuige), the largest and most prized of all Lewisâs golden strands. The best way to reach the beach is from the cemetery car park in Ardroil (Eadar Dha Fhadhail), a couple of miles south of Timsgarry. Youâll find the ruins of Dun Borranish here, though very little information exists about its past use or origins.
