This species is heavily barred on the back and pale buffy-brown below but with yellow on the belly. The male has a red crown and yellow nape. The female is similar but lacks the red crown and has a smaller area of yellow on the nape. It inhabits the less dense woodlands of secondary forests, dry forests, plantations and gardens. Supplements its insect diet with fruits and nectar. Usually seen in pairs. Occurs commonly on north Pacific slopes but is expanding its range onto the Caribbean side. The similar Red-crowned Woodpecker Melanerpes rubricapillus, replaces it on the south Pacific slope.
