Chapter 9

It didn’t take long for the air within the closet to become stale and humid. The oil kept them from sweating. Trapped the heat. With the four of them crowded into the space, Annabel was quickly on the brink of heatstroke. Her hands were the only thing that kept her eyes from rolling into the back of her head. Burns trapped within a sauna was a kind of torment she had never felt before. Sweat beaded around her mouth as Henry kept one hand clamped around her mouth, trying to stifle her moans. She was grateful for his constant hold. Without it, she wouldn’t have remained where she was. She’d have headed out and faced what was coming.

But Henry kept his hold, pressing her so tightly to his chest that she was able to feel his shallow breathing. Egil and Marcus had been the first into the storage room. They were now tucked in the back, one of them shuffling anxiously while the other shushed them. Every so often, Annabel picked up on the little click of the bottles rattling together. Each time, she squeezed her eyes shut and forced herself to hold still. Don’t clench your hands. Don’t move, she told herself. All of the commands ran like an underground stream beneath the internal screams. Please, God, don’t let the bottles break!

Then the screams began. Blood-curdling shrieks that seemed to break free from the pits of hell.

Unable to see anything, Annabel could only judge the movements of the others by the cluster of motion and grunts. She supposed it was Marcus who made a leap for the door. He was the only one who didn’t know what was waiting for them beyond the busted door. From the shuffle and sharp sounds, Egil was trying to keep him back. They jostled against Henry’s back, hard enough to shove him and, consequently, Annabel into the walls. Her hands crunched between the unmovable wall and her body. She screamed, the sound barely muffled by Henry’s hand. A sudden twist, a sharp jerk, and Henry threw his elbow back. It collided with someone because the struggle soon came to an end.

“Stop,” Egil hissed, his voice barely loud enough to cover Annabel’s broken sobs. “You’re going to get us all killed.”

“Can’t you hear them?” Marcus shot back.

A snap of movement, the door rattled, and Egil’s voice came again. All the while, the screams continued.

“Yes, I hear them. And we’re hiding from what’s going after them.”

Shrieks streaked across them, never close enough for them to hear footsteps against the stood corridor. Annabel squeezed her eyes shut tight, feeling tears seep out and drip off of her lashes.

“We can’t just do nothing,” Marcus whispered.

“Marcus,” Henry’s chest rumbled against Annabel’s back as he spoke. “I’ve told you what’s out there. You can’t fight them. Now shut up!”

“Ghosts?” Marcus almost laughed the word. “I’ve tried to be understanding of your trauma, but this is too much. You’ve gone insane.”

Henry was quick to reply, “What do you think is happening here? An eclipse?”

Marcus stammered.
