Chapter Eleven

Bart watched them go, every muscle in his body wanting to follow her. The look in Nico’s eyes had turned his stomach to stone. In that moment he could see why people feared Nico, but he wouldn’t hurt Lucy, would he?

The articles on his computer screen when he’d researched his father’s background popped up in his mind. His fist clenched when he remembered the long rap sheet of crimes attributed to Nico, but the worst was the memory of his mother’s trembling voice when she’d recounted the beating she’d witnessed. He didn’t care who he hurt. No matter what Nico had done, though, it never seemed to be enough to convict him.

Javier joined Bart in the dining room, his shrewd eyes missing nothing as he glanced down at Bart’s clenched hands. “Are you ready to go to your room, sir?”

Bart relaxed enough to nod, feeling very much like a naughty child being escorted from the table. As they left the dining room, he looked down the hall in the direction Nico had taken Lucy, but all the doors were shut. She could be anywhere by now.

“So, does Lucy stay in the house here?” Maybe he could visit her later and make sure she was all right.

“No, she has her own villa down the road.”

Bart made a mental note. “My father said he had business with Lucy tonight. Does that usually take a long time?” He tried to ask it as casually as possible. “I mean, will I see my father again tonight?” Or have a chance to see Lucy.

Javier was silent for a moment and Bart wondered if the man was going to answer at all. “It’s hard to say,” he said finally. “You’d best go to bed and look for your father in the morning.”

Bart raised his eyebrows. “You think he’ll be meeting with Lucy for that long? That seems excessive when she’s had a long flight and has injuries that need to be taken care of.” Would Nico add to those injuries or merely interrogate her about what happened in Hartford?

“Lucy is a valued employee and well cared for.” Javier sounded like he’d spouted some party line and Bart had a hard time buying it.

“Does someone need to check on her? Maybe remind Señor Castillo of the difficulty Lucy’s had the last few days?”

Javier’s step quickened as they climbed a flight of stairs. He obviously didn’t want to be a part of this conversation anymore.

Bart lengthened his stride to keep up with the little man in front of him. “Answer me.” He kept his voice low, but commanding.

Javier merely shook his head and stopped in front of a door at the end of the hall. He let out a breath, obviously relieved to have arrived at their destination and opened the door with a flourish. “Here is your room, señor. I hope you’ll find everything you need.”

Bart walked in, not surprised at the enormity of the room itself and the sumptuousness of the furnishings. One wall was entirely glass and the view of the brilliant turquoise ocean beyond was breathtaking.
