judgment. In a broad sense, God's evaluation as to the rightness or wrongness of an act of a creature, whether human or angelic, using the standard of God's own righteous and holy character. In a more specific sense, judgment refers to the future event when God through Jesus Christ will judge all people, whether righteous or wicked, for their works done while on earth. The NT indicates that all people, whether Christian or not, will be judged according to their deeds; however, Christians will be accepted in light of the work of Christ on their behalf.

justice. In a general sense, the practice of giving reward or punishment for what is rightly due to a person or group of people. From a theological perspective, because God is sinless and holy, the justice of God demands that all persons and nations receive punishment because of their sin. In Christ the requirements of divine justice are met, and as a result, individuals can find mercy from God through Jesus Christ as the Holy Spirit draws them and convicts them of sin. In light of God's own just dealings with humankind, God also demands that humans deal justly with one another (Mt 23:23) and seek to release those under oppression, whether because of ethnic origin, gender or sociopolitical status (Is 58:6).

justification, justification by faith. A forensic (legal) term related to the idea of acquittal, justification refers to the divine act whereby God makes humans, who are sinful and therefore worthy of condemnation, acceptable before a God who is holy and righteous. More appropriately described as "justification by grace through faith," this key doctrine of the *Reformation asserts that a sinner is justified (pardoned from the punishment and condemnation of sin) and brought into relationship with God by faith in God's grace alone.
