I feel sick.

After class, Epatha and the other girls are less friendly to me. “Lucky you,” Epatha says.

“Lucky, yeah,” says Brenda, as she jerks her T-shirt over her head.

Terrel looks as if she’d like to tie my legs to a bench.

What is wrong with these people? Is it my fault my name popped out of that hat? I’d rather have to wear an 1880s sailor suit for the rest of my life than be the Sugar Plum Fairy. “I really wish it wasn’t me,” I say, trying to sound calm, the way Mama does when she’s mad.

“Oh, sure you do,” says Epatha. “It’s such a burden to be a star.”

“Are you sure your mom isn’t going out with Mr. Lester?” Terrel asks.

My scalp begins to prickle. Getting the part was bad enough, but now they think I’m a liar on top of it?

“My mom is not going out with Mr. Lester, and I do not want to be the Sugar Plum Fairy. I don’t even want to be in the stupid show.” So much for sounding calm. My voice gets higher and louder with every word.

Brenda looks skeptical. Epatha snorts.

“Everyone wants to be the Sugar Plum Fairy,” Terrel says.

That does it. “I don’t!” I yell. “How many times do I have to tell you? Doesn’t anybody in New York have ears?”

Epatha’s jaw drops open. I yank off my ballet slippers, put on my sneakers, and storm out the door.
