“Your Majesty.”

The guards outside the royal chambers bowed to Nanel as she approached. “Is the king in?” she inquired.

“He is, my lady. Anything you need?”

“Yes, Samuel. Fetch Irma for me.”

“Right away, my lady.”

Entering the room, she found Raven seated on the floor, leaning against the wall, deep in meditation. She sighed softly and moved to the mirror, beginning to remove the jewelry she’d worn for the celebration. Her gaze occasionally shifted to Raven, then to her own reflection, her thoughts racing.

What if he becomes too engrossed in his training after our child is born? What if he keeps leaving, chasing after more power?

The what-ifs were relentless.

“Everything okay?” Raven’s voice broke her train of thought.

She turned to see him, looking both tired and concerned. “Yeah, just a lot on my mind.”

“You seem worn out. Anything bothering you?”

“A bit, actually. I’m expecting, after all.” She smiled, adjusting her hair.

“I’ll be here for you.”

“You better be. Don’t even think about leaving us behind.”

Their moment was interrupted by a knock, followed by a youthful voice, “Your Majesty, Irma’s here.”

“Come in,” Nanel responded, then gave Raven a playful glance. “So, more training or some time with your expecting wife?”

“I’m all yours,” he replied, stretching slightly and thinking that his new skill still needed work.
