Rebecca, Aleksi, and Baby Sand the teddy bear.
Sweetly scented blooms just outside the window add another level of enjoyment to the bedroom.
Growing up on a farm in Australia, plants and gardening were a constant in Rebecca’s life. Her childhood was attuned to the seasons: from sun ripening the berries to mushrooms that popped up after rain. Gardening is in her heart.
A career in international diplomacy brought her to Paris, but when she was ready for a new challenge she opened Jardinière Sauvage. “I also love lamps and chairs, which would be more profitable than selling plants, but I wanted to share my love of gardening and sell something more than just a product. Plants are not things—they are life!”
Whether their goal is to plant seeds (local to the region) and keep their initial plant care quick and easy—or to really dig and get their hands dirty growing their own vegetables (even in the middle of the city) and saving seeds for the next season—all of Rebecca’s customers want to learn and grow. “Gardening is like meditation; time to be in the present. Keeping a vegetable garden is hard work and heavy meditation, but I love and need it.”
Even though Rebecca’s apartment is a green oasis, with lush balconies on all sides, her eyes light up when she speaks of outdoor plants. “You can touch them, they react, you see them grow, and they give you produce or flowers. And through my Japanese pruning shears I communicate with them.”
The plants and collections in Rebecca’s Parisian apartment—from designer furniture to souvenirs to quirky finds and vintage treasures—make for an interesting mix. “I have a connection with all things I own; that’s why I’m a hoarder. For example, the cowhides from Argentina that I brought back to Paris in my backpack have been with me for many, many years.”
Rebecca also shares her passion and knowledge of greenery with her son, Aleksi. From an early age he has helped with plant care around the house. “He always gives me drawings of plants and flowers, and in the shop he loves to help water. When we’re in the garden, he is barefoot just like me, to be grounded.”
A robust watering can, a jardinière, and some terra-cotta pots in Rebecca’s winter garden.
