Week 4: Sunny week

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

Talk about sun safety. Show the children a selection of sun hats and sunscreen lotions. Make posters to encourage people to protect themselves from the sun. Encourage children to take responsibility for themselves by wearing hats and keeping in the shade. (PS4, 8)

Talk about droughts and countries where it is always hot. Talk about ways we can save water such as not leaving the tap running when we clean our teeth. (PS5)

Communication, Language and Literacy

Write a group poem about the sun. Display the poem in a big book. (L4, 18)

Show pictures of children on a sunny day. Talk about the sequence of events as a child wakes and dresses on a sunny morning. (L7, 8, 12)

Play a version of the ‘I went shopping’ game. Children sit in a circle. The first child starts the story by saying ‘T woke up one sunny day and I . ’ choosing a suitable activity with which to complete the sentence. The second child repeats the opening phrase and activity, and then adds their own. The game progresses around the group, each child adding their own activity to the list. Encourage all the children to help each other to remember the list in their turn. (L2, 3)
