Chapter 38

Floor by floor, one ambush at a time, we made our way toward the upper floors of the skyscraper. Each floor was more corrupted than the last, with the Entropic growths covering the walls like a living environment.

The smell was almost unbearable, a humid, rotting odor. The very air we breathed was an uncomfortable abomination.

Scourgers, Flamestalkers, and Maulers were on every floor, and our party was able to contend with them somewhat effectively when we coordinated our strengths. With each enemy felled, I collected more aethereum.

Once we got high enough, the staircase was blocked by the mass, forcing us to enter the nearest floor looking for a way up.

We reached a period of eerie quiet, one in which there weren’t any Entropics. Not a sound, not a single enemy alerted us. That was alarming in and of itself because they knew we were coming.

“Nadia, are you picking anything up?” I asked as a wet squish accompanied my next step onto the overgrown floor.

“It’s all over the place, I’m not locking anything down,” said Nadia. “This stuff is reading like a creature.”

“We need to find its nucleus or head, whatever controls it,” Nadia warned.

“I can hit it with Entropic Eradication, but that could bring the building down on top of us.”

“Then let’s chop it up,” Helga suggested.

“I sense water in the walls,” Kassandre noted.

“Yeah that’s the plumbing,” I replied.

“There’s another staircase this way!” Nadia announced while pointing down a grotesque hallway entirely constructed of the growth.

A large red tentacle suddenly burst out of the wall next to us, swinging and lashing wildly as we all jumped aside. It got Helga in the chest, knocking her several meters away.

“Helga!” I shouted.

I put everything into my strength, then hacked and slashed at the flailing tentacle while Kassandre hurled magic bolts at it. The tentacle writhed and made horrid sounds, but did not withdraw or cease its assault.

It bashed the floor hard, then stretched itself toward Kassandre. I got in the way and blocked with my shield, then stabbed the tip of the tentacle as black sludge oozed out of it. My sword was pulled away when the tentacle lashed sideways, then snapped back to knock me off my feet.

Brratatatatatat! Nadia unleashed a rapid-fire flurry of solid projectiles from her Gatling cannon, shredding entire chunks of the tentacle as black spatter stained the mutated corridor. My sword fell to the ground once the piece it was stabbing got blown clean off.

Kassandre hit the tentacle with lightning next, causing it to instantly retract back into the wall. Helga charged into the hole it left behind, growling in frustration when it had completely disappeared on a higher floor.

“When I find this thing’s head…” Helga ranted as she came back out.

“I couldn’t do much against it either,” I said as I picked up my sword and wiped the sludge from it. “Distance attacks are our best bet against those things for now.”

Nadia started scanning again, giving us a three-dimensional layout of the floor plan. When all the exits proved to be blocked, she shook her head with a frustrated expression.
