LUCIA

It was driving her mad to be kept in Alessandra’s cabin like a disobedient child. Lucia paced across the room, her boots barely making a sound as they traveled back and forth, back and forth over the piled rugs. With her hands clasped behind her back and head bowed in concentration, she considered her options if things went badly. She had found a dagger in another of Alessandra’s trunks, which she then tucked into the sash around her waist. She was ready to attack if anyone besides Alessandra entered the room, but no one came.

She pressed her ear to the door when she heard Alessandra’s raised voice, but the wood was thick, the voices too muffled to make out. Then it was quiet. Too quiet for her comfort. Unable to wait a moment longer, Lucia opened the door a crack and peered across the lower deck, where she saw Alessandra, coat off, shirtsleeves rolled to her elbows, hat forgotten in Rafe’s hands. Lucia watched, rapt, as her lover unfurled a black leather flog, the thick strips falling nearly to her toes as a shirtless man waited, lashed to the mast.

Lucia’s eyes widened as she crouched low behind a railing. The flog was the sort of instrument she’d used on many a partner. The width of the individual strands told her Alessandra didn’t mean to hurt the lad. Still, Lucia’s breath caught as the captain raised her hand and brought it down hard across the man’s back with a heavy thud. The action caused a jolt of desire to crack through Lucia’s body like lightning. Gods. She continued to look on breathlessly as Alessandra meted out punishment time and time again.

With every thud that landed, Lucia found herself more and more enthralled. She had never been on the outside of such an encounter before. It was beautiful. Alessandra was beautiful. Her lips were pursed, and her brows were furrowed in concentration, making sure every lick of the flogger hit the lad’s back with precision to incur the most impact with the least amount of damage.

Lucia realized she was shaking with need as her lover landed each thumping blow on the sailor’s back. The punishment wasn’t meant to do any real harm—the act itself was symbolic more than anything—but to Lucia, who had only ever dealt such blows, the image sent a ripple of desire and understanding coursing through her.

Lucia could hear Alessandra’s labored breathing as the captain nodded to Rafe before turning back toward her cabin. Lucia hadn’t even realized she was no longer hiding but standing in full view until Alessandra’s gaze locked onto hers. Only then, as the pirate’s long strides carried her quickly across the deck, did Lucia see her mistake.

“What are you doing?” Alessandra took hold of her arm and dragged Lucia back inside, slamming the door behind them. “You shouldn’t be out there right now! It’s not safe,” she scolded.

Lucia was flushed, her palms clammy. “I—I’m sorry.”

Her eyes searched her lover’s for the answer to her body’s response.
