Justin took the private elevator up to Anthony Marshall’s office. Dolly Fallon was waiting for him in reception and ushered him in.
“You look well rested,” Anthony Marshall said.
“I seem to have lost or misplaced the letter my father left me,” Justin said. “I went by their place again yesterday morning, but I couldn’t find it.”
“I’m sure it will turn up. Why don’t you check your apartment again?” Marshall asked, knowing that, thanks to Ivan Raines, the letter containing details of Pratt’s offshore accounts had already been through the shredder that sat beside the credenza behind Marshall’s desk—but not before he had memorized the contents.
“Hopefully the maid will be better at sifting through my junk than I am,” Justin said.
“I want to talk to you about Gerald’s shares in Pinnacle. I think I can work something out for you. Take a look at this,” Marshall said, pointing to a huge bundle of paper. “It contains information for the last five years, including balance sheets, profit and loss statements, cash flow, sources and uses of funds, and just about everything else you’ll need to review to make an informed decision. Do you have a lawyer?”
“I’m using Mel Leeb, an old friend of mine.”
“I think I knew his father. Wasn’t he a lawyer, too?”
“They were both with Eisen Silverberg and Trautman. Mel just left them to go on his own.”
“The only way I can offer anything that might interest you would be if we can close by September 30, which is our fiscal year-end. If we can conclude everything by then and sign a contract within a week or so, allowing me to make whatever other arrangements I need to in order to accommodate the transaction, then I’m ready to talk price.”
“Timing isn’t an issue for me,” Justin assured him. “As long as I can get Mel and an accounting firm to review everything.”
“Then let’s cut to the chase,” Marshall said, leaning back in his leather chair and forming a pyramid with his fingers. “I’m prepared to offer you ninety million dollars—cash.”
“Ninety million?” Justin gripped the lip of Marshall’s oversized desk. “That’s more than I thought they were worth. That’s very generous.”
“I’m only being fair,” Anthony Marshall replied, knowing that with stocks being in a bull market, he could float the same ten percent as an IPO on the Big Board after Labor Day for more than one hundred and fifty and maybe as much as two hundred million. “Give this summary to your people, and let’s get this all wrapped up within the week. And Justin, I’m paying such a large amount assuming you’ll stay on for at least a couple of years, even though you’ll be a very wealthy young man.”

“Justin, what’s up?” Mel Leeb asked, cradling the receiver under his chin.
“I just left Anthony Marshall’s office. Are you sitting down?”
“Yeah, yeah. Go on, for chrissakes. What happened? Did he fire you?” Leeb laughed, in his characteristic hyena-like tone.
“Not exactly. In fact he wants me to stay on and he offered me ninety million greenbacks for my father’s shares,” Justin blurted out.
